Sound the depth

From the pilot's glossary

shorecut(n.)

a passage taken through a gyre. From the older sense: the fast way past a headland, close in, over unsounded ground. So called because a crew that takes one always makes a shore. Rarely the one they left.

The voyage

Nothing is yours until you're back over the line.

ARM · r 880 m EXTRACT · r 1100 m 15:00 on the voyage clock
  1. Sail out

Take a contract, fit out, weigh anchor.

  2. Arm the voyage

Cross the inner ring: fifteen minutes on the chronometer.

  3. Loot under the timer

Swim ashore, break the chests, ferry it all back to the hold.

  4. Cross back over the line

Outbound, with a living crew member on the deck.

  5. Bank it

Miss the line and every item on it reads lost.

Take one cannon and you command that whole side.

Lookout

Light, stealth or violence: pick two.

Boarding

Leap the rail, climb the ladder, take the prize brig.

The Crossing

The Crossing

A stationary wall of weather, turning slowly clockwise, lightning in it that makes no sound.

Inside, the sea is dead flat and silvered. Steering is inverted.

At the centre, the eye. The bell rings itself.

Arrival. Wrong sky. Wrong stars. Wrong coastline.

Five eras, one rock

Where the shorecut lands is chance. What you do there is not.

Equipment is identity

Everything you wear was found, looted or cut off a body. Everyone can see it on you.

The signature punishment

You do not die in a gyre. You go Late.

The recovery screen is not a death screen. It is a ledger.

The port

Sixteen Bells

There is no such thing as sixteen bells. The port is named for the joke: a place where the watch never ends.

  • No PvP.
  • No timers.
  • The only place in the game where nothing can be taken from you.
